Corelle Livingware Memphis 16-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 4 Review

If it was just the picture on the website, I might think it was just my computer screen. However, the box also shows a very bright blue mug and the colors in the plate too. When the box is opened, I found a lighter blue...not primary bright blue, more like a Williamsburg Blue. It is still pretty but not what I really wanted. The other colors are the same way...pictured as very bright but muted out of the box.
Another deceptive thing to note on the picture. It appears that the smaller plate is almost as big as the dinner plate. It is described as a salad plate...it is a bread and butter sized plate. I am not impressed with that. That being said the detailed description does state the correct dimensions of that plate. In a typical family-style dinner I really have no use for it. I would like a larger salad plate that is just the right size for the kids.
As others posted, I too wish the Memphis pattern would also be on the other complementary tableware. Lighter color issues aside I do like the pattern. I would only suggest that when one makes a purchase you realize the picture is only slightly deceptive.
I do like the Corelle name of products. With my kids learning how to set a table, I need something a little more durable. This will do nicely until they are old enough to be able to deal with china.

Breville SK500XL Ikon Cordless 1.7-Liter Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle Review

Breville SK500XL Ikon Cordless 1.7-Liter Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've had ours for one month after the cheapo plastic one died. I investigated multiple other high-end electric kettles, including Cuisinart, Chef' Choice, Krups, Braun by reading reviews on-line and comparing them @ the local bricks & mortar stores. The Breville is clearly the best designed one for the money.
Pros:
- clean, beautiful design which is also easier to clean.
- hefty, substantial base unit with place to wrap around the cord
- boils quickly in 4 min. for full 1.5 L
- more substantial kettle than more expensive models by Chef's Choice or Cuisinart. The Chef's Tools electric kettle @ the same price point looked flimsier. In fact, the floor model Chef's Choice kettle was no longer closing or opening its lid properly-- always a bad sign when a floor model falls apart.
- modest yet easily audible "ping" sound when the water has come to a boil, and the kettle shuts off automatically.
- the outlet is easy to pull due to the hollow center design
Cons:
- heavy kettle.
- occasionally, there's a metallic taste in reboiled water if the water was left inside the kettle for several hours. However, the water tastes fine if you boil a pot from freshly filled water.
Overall, clearly the pros outweigh the cons. We're heavy users of the electric kettle, especially in the winter, boiling water for teas, soups at least 4-5x per day. We'll report back again in a yr after the warranty expires.
UPDATE > 1 yr after post (4/6/08): The Breville Ikon is still going strong. The water seems to be taking a slightly longer time to boil. We still use it 3-4 times per day, and it works well.

Equipped with a 1500-watt immersed heating element, this electric kettle quickly brings up to 1-2/3 liters of water to a rolling boil. To use, simply fill the kettle using the LED-illuminated water-level indicator to gauge how much, return it to its power base, and flip the switch to the "on" position. In about two minutes, hot water will be ready for anything from tea, instant coffee, and hot cocoa to instant soup or oatmeal. The kettle lifts off its power base for graceful serving without the hassle of a cord and can be returned at any angle. Other highlights include a cushion-controlled lid that opens with the press of a button, a viewing window in the lid, a "ready" bell indicator, a removable scale filter, a soft-grip open-style handle, and convenient cord storage. For safety, the kettle automatically shuts off when water reaches a full boil, and its boil-dry protection won't allow the unit to operate without water inside. Housed in premium-quality brushed stainless steel, the kettle measures 8-3/4 by 6 by 9 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

I absolutely LOVE this berry colander. It is truly for berries. I bought this because we are always cleaning berries, grapes and small fruits for our parrots. Norpro Colored Wood Bowl, 2 Cups, 16 ounces Review

Norpro Colored Wood Bowl, 2 Cups, 16 ounces
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very nice colors. Excellent quality. (thick, not thin)
Only thing is that I thought a 2 cup item would be larger, thinking that their "2 cup" description meant that it would hold 2 cups of nuts, candy, or whatnot.
I actually "tested" it with a 2 cup measuring cup. The bowl only held the entire 2 cups of water because the water sort of "rounded up" and thus didn't go over the edge of the bowl.
If you plan to use it as a serving dish, as I did, you'll need to plan on about 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups of food product. If you need a 2 cup untensil, buy something else because the food would spill out if anyone dipped a spoon into it for their serving.

Calphalon HE650CO XL 1400-Watt 0.7-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Convection Oven Review

Calphalon HE650CO XL 1400-Watt 0.7-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Convection Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had very high hopes for this oven. It has the Calphalon name on it. Their PR write up sounds so promising. The warranty is good. The oven is handsome. Too bad it fails as an oven though. I tested this oven thoroughly upon receipt. I knew I had to make sure this was a keeper given the price. Save your money and buy a $60 toaster oven. It is important to share that I never use a 'big' oven. Normal ovens pull 3500 watts. They cost a fortune and the overwhelming majority of people don't need such a cavernous appliance. So I bake a lot and everything in countertop ovens. This oven suffers from bad design flaws. You can only use the middle rack position or you will burn the top or bottom of your food. There is almost no internal clearance for anything but the shallowest casserole dish. If you use the rack in the inverted position facing downwards (it has a 'dip' design to - not flat) and pull the rack out to safely remove the dish, the dish slides at a fast clip right out of the oven - almost lost a dish as it rapidly headed for the floor. This is happening because the rack tips down once you pull it forward enough to safely grasp the hot pan. Now I had to flip the rack and use it in that position due to the excessively low clearance - my small casserole dish wouldn't fit and I couldn't move the rack down lest I burn the food - you see where this circle never ends. This occurred regardless of using a casserole dish or a bake sheet. And the back left quadrant cooks much faster than the rest of the oven. I had to watch the food and rotate the pan - talk about aggravating. The back of the oven is actually angled forward presenting a really strange limitation on what it can really hold. I tested many different types of items in the oven to be as thorough and fair as I possibly could especially since it came in such a large packing box. It is going to be a pain to return but return I must unless I feel like cursing everytime I attempt to use it. I am wondering if the people who designed this ever actually used it? A few design changes and this product wouldn't be such a beast.
Clarification: There is an 'edge' to the rack that, when used with the invert facing upwards will stop any dish from sliding out. But the loss of clear space above means only pans or very shallow dishes can be used. Tried using it in this position in the lowest slots but that was still so close to the lower elements that the bottom of the cinnamon rolls burned. Just want to be specific about the issues faced. I am looking for a counter top oven that does more than just pizza, biscuits, etc.. I believe the enclosed user guide mentioned you could use this oven to cook a chicken. It had better be either a cut up one or a miniature one.

Attractively housed in stainless steel, this convection oven not only looks great on the countertop, it also provides an array of convenient features. The appliance bakes, broils, and toasts, and its large 0.7-cubic-foot capacity can accommodate a 9-by-13-inch pan, a 12-inch pizza, or six slices of bread, bagel halves, or English muffin halves. To toast, simply press the "toast" button and select from "light", "medium", or "dark" shade settings. For baking, turn the temperature control knob to the desired heat setting, ranging from 250 to 450 degrees F, then set the timer up to 60 minutes or choose the "always on" setting for continuous operation. For convection baking, simply push the button and the convection fan circulates warm air around food during the baking cycle for superior browning and even baking or roasting. Or, turn the control knob to "broil" and set the timer; the unit's upper heating element will quickly sear meats or melt cheese on garlic bread. A chime will sound once the timer ticks down to zero, or with the "always on" setting, the unit will shut off automatically after two hours. Other highlights include an Opti-Heat system for premium heating, a glass door for checking on the cooking progress at a glance, a high-performance bronze nonstick interior, and a removable crumb tray for quick cleanup. Accessories include a nonstick heavy-gauge 9-by-13-inch baking pan/broil rack and an easy-to-follow instruction book. With its sleek, contoured shape, the 1400-watt convection oven measures 16 by 17-2/3 by 10-2/5 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Delonghi BG24 Perfecto Indoor Grill Review

Delonghi BG24 Perfecto Indoor Grill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this grill about a week ago and I love it. First of all the cooking area is BIG.. and wonderful so that you can really cook. I also love how you can adjust the heat setting depending on what you are cooking instead of like my former George where it was 1 temp was supposed to cook all ( which burnt the outside of thick pieces of meat and chicken breast and left the inside way underdone)I also love how the fat drips down immediatly into the tray. On my George ( a big one) the fat would come sort of off one burger and then run into the other burger and stay there without ever going into the tray thing. Clean up is alot easier than George because I can stick all of it except the temp control into the sink or dishwasher to wash. I also like the lid that keeps the food from drying out while cooking and warm before it is served. I will admit it is not as fast as George but honestly the quality of food I cook is so much better b/c it has been cooked right and not just fast. This grill IMO is much more similar to cooking on an outside grill and the taste is better for it. I highly reccomed this product over it's competition, there is no comparrison! Move over George, YOU GO GRILL!

Bodum Assam 34-Ounce Glass Teapot with Stainless-Steel Filter Review

Bodum Assam 34-Ounce Glass Teapot with Stainless-Steel Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bodum design and quality has always intrigued me in both positive and negative ways. I have in the past easily broken a bodum glass item and yet I am still drawn into purchasing another product.
I've wanted the Bodum Assam 34-ounce cast-iron version for longevity, but the weight of it alone is too much to handle to brew tea. So I opted for this 34-ounce glass version which is very light and, like other Bodum borosilicate glass items, delicate. I have yet to break porcelain items by simple bumps while washing, but with a Bodum I am sure to crack them in time.
However, after much searching for a tea brewing device which affords functionality and simplicity, I fall for a Bodum yet again.
WHY? It is only this brand that features a tea press that stops the brewing process when the desired strength has been reached.
HOW? The loose leaves are placed on the center inside the stainless steel filter. When you want the brewing process to stop, the plunger pushes the leaves down the bottom of the filter away from the liquid and sealed by a silicon rubber ring surrounding the plunger. It's a simple ingenious design carried and modified from their coffee press.
PROS:
- Effective and ingenious plunger to create a tailored brewing strength depending on user, water volume and type of tea leaves
- Despite a thin glass container, surprisingly keeps the liquid hot for a relatively long time.
- Simple design makes an elegant product that matchces any interior as well as hand washing very easy.
- No spill in pouring. I was afraid the small lip may cause spilling while pouring, but I experienced none. No spills travelling down the wall after pouring as well.
- Glass version allows you to view the brewing the process and cater to your needs.
CONS:
- Thin borosilicate glass makes the tea press more fragile than you think.
- Plunger design is simple, but clumsy as well. Plunger stalk has to be aligned completely vertical or pushing straight down will be met with great resistance especially as the silicon rubs against the stainless steel wall.
- Loose leaves are not all contained on the bottom as some may escape thru the silicon seal and shred against the stainless steel filter wall. If this happens, the brewing process is not effectively and completely stopped. The leaves especially escape if you don't align the plunger completely vertically. (You will know what I am talking about when you own it and experience the same).VERDICT:
You have a choice between an extremely heavy cast-iron version or the extremely light glass version. I wish Bodum created a thicker-walled version in glass so I can still view the brewing process and have it less fragile than most Bodum products these days.
For the price, I really can't complain so I find myself purchasing yet another functional and patented Bodum product. Until another company has come up with an ingenious plunger system that is better built, I guess Bodum it will be for now.

Emsa E503392 Clip and Close Rectangular Food-Storage Container with Lid and 3 Removable Inserts Review

Emsa E503392 Clip and Close Rectangular Food-Storage Container with Lid and 3 Removable Inserts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the BEST container for packing a lunch. The internal trays are perfectly sized for reasonable portions of an entree and two sides and I don't have to worry about the contents mixing or shifting on my way to work. I can pack any mix of hot/cold food items - just lift out the inserts that hold the hot food items and microwave them separately. You can further subdivide the compartments with silicon cupcake liners, if you like a lot of variety in your meal. This is great if you like to pack bento-style lunches.
This has never leaked in my purse, which is a HUGE plus. It is so much more convenient than packing multiple tupperware or ziploc containers/bags. One star off because I've noticed that after a couple rounds in the microwave, the edges of the inserts are bowing and warping a bit and they no longer fit snugly in the outside container. But that won't stop me from using it or buying another one for backup.

Norpro Stainless Steel Wide Mouth Funnel with Silicone Strainer

I bought this thinking I'd just use it for help with canning hot items but I've since found that it's useful all over the house. I use it to funnel coffee beans into bags, to put popcorn into the popcorn maker, just about anything I need to funnel into a bag or machine, it's perfect!
It has a handle that's long and off to the side so it doesn't get as hot as the rest of the funnel when dealing with warm items, and the silicone strainer is great if the item isn't too heavy (it can get pushed through if something over a pound hits it).
Really a great little funnel.

0.5 Cu. Ft. Digital Convection Toaster Oven Review

0.5 Cu. Ft. Digital Convection Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had the DO1289 for a month and overall I am very happy with it. The toaster is gorgeous and does a great job baking. I have cooked fish and steaks and everything has turned out perfectly. The convection fan is not too loud and does its job well. In terms of toasting, the oven is not spectacular, but certainly adequate. Getting a crispy slice of toast takes about 5 minutes. Though it takes a few clicks to do anything on the toaster, the controls and knobs are straightforward and well designed.
I spent a long time analyzing and breaking down the pros and cons of the different top quality toasters so hopefully this review can save you some time. Here are the other toasters I looked at seriously :
Cuisinart TOB-195: Generally well-reviewed, but I could not get past the fact that the toaster does not have automatic shut-off. This is a key safety feature that I was unwilling to sacrifice. The DO1289 does have auto shut-off and turns off after beeping loudly 3 times. In addtion, the Cuisinart's crumb tray comes out the back, which seems totally stupid and impractical.
Krups FBC2: Looked like the perfect toaster, but again a safety feature got in the way. Apparently the Krups model has a poorly constructed door hinge and is prone to exploding. The DO1289's door is very smooth opening and seems well constructed. The Krups' quartz heating would have been nice, but still not worth it. I also suspect that the Delonghi has a little more overhead clearance than the Krups so I can roast a small chicken.
Breville Smart Oven: This oven has almost every feature and is the most powerful and spacious of the bunch, but $250 for a toaster is just absurd. I bought my Delonghi refurbished for $70, so it was no contest.
The Delonghi also has an oven light (which most others do not) and a bright permanently illuminated display--a nice feature at night for seeing the time. One other feature that doesn't get much attention, but was very important to me, is the Delonghi's Durastone enamel interior. This is great because, unlike toasters with traditional nonstick interiors, I can put metal and glass dishes in the oven, as well as aluminum foil (every one of the other aforementioned ovens advises against using glass or foil). Durastone is apparently nonstick so I can only hope that it has fewer chemicals or is safer than traditional nonstick (I would love it if someone knew the answer). Either way, it is a step up from the other high end toasters that I researched.
Based on my comparisons with other toaster ovens, I found that the Delonghi 1289 is the best designed and most practical. The Delonghi's performance is very good, though not spectacular, it has great features and, in my opinion, is the best choice for a high-end toaster oven.
UPDATE: After over a year owning the Delonghi DO-1289, I am still very happy and everything continues to work exactly as it should.

I bought this 3 quart size for my small motorhome. I just LOVE it.
It goes in the microwave, the pouring lip is super handy for when I make up mixes. I've used it as a festive salad bowl.
I've boiled noodles in it, in the microwave. I've made popcorn from scratch in it, by using an inverted microwave plastic plate cover as a lid. I've steamed veggies in it in the microwave. I have a special breakfast mix I make once a week, it's perfect for mixing that all up.
It snaps down to about 1.5 inches, and fits in my cabinet so nicely. I just love this bowl. It's a fabulous invention. I want more of this stuff!

While the product quality is good, these 3 shapes are REALLY large. Much larger than I anticipated. The circle is 5-1/8 inch in outside diameter, and 4-5/8 inch inside diameter. I think this is really too large for a single egg (unless you use a jumbo egg)....maybe two eggs would be more like it. Great for a pancake, though. The circle is way too big for cooking an egg for an english muffin sandwich, or even a large hamburg roll. The star would be OK for a single egg, or a smaller pancake, but the heart too large for an egg....again, OK for a pancake.
